Calvary Health Care's Maternity and Women's Health Unit has been operational since 1940, taking pride in its sixty plus year reputation of serving the Tasmanian Community. This reputation is founded on providing high quality clinical services in a caring and compassionate environment. During the last sixty years, the Hospital has been privileged to share in welcoming over 52,000 babies into our community.

Our People

The sixty years of experience has provided our Maternity Unit staff with a deep understanding and empathy for the special needs of you and your family. Our staff are highly skilled and carefully selected to ensure that we provide you with the highest standard of Maternity Care. Our focus is on the family and enhancing the bond between mother, baby and all family members.

Calvary has an ongoing commitment in providing leading edge medical technology that offers you the very best health care available. Our birthing suites are designed with an emphasis on your personal comfort, conducive to rest and relaxation. This coupled with state of the art medical technology, provides you with a safe and comfortable environment in which to have your baby.

We encourage your partner and/or support person to be involved in your care during labour.

For premature or unwell babies, our level two Intensive Care Nursery is specially equipped and staffed by experienced professionals.

Your Accommodation

The Maternity Unit is located on the third floor of the Lenah Valley Campus and offers you a premier facility. Our tastefully decorated unit has been designed to cater for the family and offers private rooms with en-suite, phone, television and baby bathing facilities. Overnight accommodation is available for your partner, with some rooms offering double bed accommodation.

Feeding Your Baby

Planning for pregnancy enhances what is sure to be one of the most joyous experiences in your lifetime. Our staff will be happy to assist you in establishing the feeding method of your choice.

Our staff are available 24 hours; please do not hesitate to call if you have any concerns or require advice.

Domiciliary Home Care

When to decide? Discuss this option with your doctor and family during pregnancy.

During Your Stay

Rooming in' is encouraged for all mothers and babies.

Food Services

Our menu has been designed to cater to your taste and preferences. The Food Service staff will be happy to discuss any special dietary needs you may have.

Maternity Bookings

Calvary Health Care Maternity bookings

Parent Education Program

Our qualified staff coordinate a comprehensive program to help you and your partner prepare for childbirth and parenting. The program is free of charge and sessions are held either in the evenings or on Saturdays.

Postnatal Education Program

Calvary Health Care post natal education program consists of a series of talks and demonstration are held each weekday morning in the Maternity Unit Lounge. These sessions are informal where interaction and participation is encouraged.
