Training & Development
Offering an extensive array of courses for both nursing and general staff, our Training and Development Department is the envy of many health care services, both private and public. Training and Development aims to offer an innovative and flexible range of personal and professional education al opportunities reflective of both the mission and values and strategic direction of Calvary Health Care Tasmania. The Training and Development Team are committed to providing employees with a range of learning and development opportunities.
You are encouraged to assess your individual learning needs and interests to take advantage of the education and training activities offered. A comprehensive education program runs over twelve months of the year, and across all campuses. Scheduled sessions are advertised on a monthly Training & Development Calendar.
Mandatory Training
The following Mandatory Training activities are required and facilitated at Calvary Health Care Tasmania:
Manual Handling: | Annual for all staff |
Fire Safety: | Annual for all staff |
Online Drug Calculations: | Annual for all nursing staff by 31 August |
Basic Life Support: | Annual for all nursing staff by 31 August |
Epidural Management: | Annual for all designated nursing staff by 31 August |
Advanced Life Support: | Annual for all A&E / CCU nursing staff |
Completion of nursing mandatory training activities at other organisations will be accepted provided that evidence of completion is submitted to the department.

Vocational Education and Training
The Commonwealth Australian Apprenticeships Program is administered by the Commonwealth Government to provide funding for employees, who meet eligibility criteria, to gain nationally recognised qualifications. This is to assist employees gain accreditation whilst employed in the health sector. Calvary Health Care Tasmania encourages and supports employees to take advantage of this Commonwealth scheme to gain national accreditation on the job.

Nursing Postgraduate Courses – University of Tasmania
All nursing staff employed by Calvary Health Care are eligible to receive a scholarship for postgraduate study with the University of Tasmania for the any of the following courses:

Graduate Nurse Transition Program
Calvary Health Care Tasmania offers a dynamic 12 month Graduate Nurse Transition Program. Our primary vision is to provide excellence in nursing care with a key focus on developing each and every individual within our organisation. The program we offer ensures graduates receive the development and training opportunities to facilitate this.
We are the largest private hospital in Tasmania with over 400 beds across four campuses, in a picturesque island state. We offer a diverse range of specialist services / units including Critical Care, Cardiac Investigations, 24 hour Accident and Emergency and Neurosurgery. Unit-based specialties incorporate General Surgical, Medical, Orthopaedics, Plastics, Endoscopy, Day Surgery, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care. The majority of acute units include a High Observation Area.
We also offer our nursing staff a comprehensive Professional Development program that runs throughout the year. The graduate program is specifically designed to meet your needs as a first year registered nurse. Our hospital offers you professional support and development opportunities achieved through study days, tutorials and supported clinical practice.
Our graduate program offers:
- A twelve-month contract
- Two six month clinical rotations
- Clinical Nurse Educator support
- Your own preceptor
- One week supernumerary orientation
- Regular study days, tutorials and practicals
