Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy uses the properties of water to achieve a client’s rehabilitation goals. It can be used as a component of a broader therapy program, or may be an individual treatment modality. Hydrotherapy is often used in the management of neurological, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular conditions, and can be beneficial to both children and adults. An ability to swim is not a prerequisite for hydrotherapy.
Adults wishing to access hydrotherapy must be referred to the Hydrotherapy Coordinator based at the Community Rehabilitation Unit in Davey Street for assessment prior to utilising the Tower Road facility.
Hydrotherapy programs are delivered in three streams:
- Complex Rehabilitation, available to clients receiving multidisciplinary rehabilitation at the Community Rehabilitation Unit (CRU) or long stay rehabilitation inpatients from Royal Hobart Hospital
- Simple Rehabilitation, available to community based individuals who do not require multidisciplinary input, and can make rehabilitation gains through an individualised, self-directed, hydrotherapy program
- Functional Maintenance, available to community-based individuals without a specific rehabilitation goal who have been identified by a health professional as likely to benefit from access to water based exercise. Please note a small fee applies to Functional Maintenance Groups
All hydrotherapy clients are regularly reviewed by their “land based” physiotherapist, to ensure their therapeutic goals are being achieved, and to facilitate their timely transition from the Hydrotherapy Service.
The Hydrotherapy Service is also utilised by the Children’s Therapy Service, with CHCT Physiotherapists co-ordinating the paediatric programs.
