Neurosurgery

Calvary Health Care Tasmania has recognised both the increasing complexity of neurosurgical procedures and the special skills of the neurosurgeons. Consequently, an advanced state of the art neurosurgical operating theatre is on-site at the Lenah Valley Campus, thereby enabling the neurosurgeons to fully utilise their surgical expertise.

Of course, complex surgery requires expert back-up. That is why we have dedicated neurosurgery nursing staff with special training, and the investigative capabilities of the radiology and nuclear medicine departments at the Lenah Valley Campus of Calvary Health Care Tasmania.

The Critical Care Unit provides immediate post-operative care for patients undergoing extremely complex neurosurgical operations. These are mainly operations on the brain and upper spine. The high staffing levels of the Critical Care Unit allow for very close monitoring of your condition for a day or two, before you are transferred back to your room in the Neurosurgical Unit.

The High Observation Area provides immediate post-operative care for patients undergoing less complex neurosurgical operations. These operations may include spinal fusions of the neck and interbody fusions. The higher staffing levels of the High Observation Area allow for close monitoring of your condition for usually 24 hours, before you are transferred back to your room in the Neurosurgical Unit.
